Annual Meeting Recap

Deerfield Beach, FL — Harness Horsemen International (HHI) successfully concluded its annual meeting February 23 – 27 in Deerfield Beach, bringing together horsemen and industry leaders from across North America for three days of education, discussion, and association business focused on the future of harness racing.

Educational Sessions Highlight Key Industry Issues

 

Tuesday’s (Feb. 24) sessions featured in-depth discussions on topics shaping the equine and wagering landscapes. Dr. Annette McCoy, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVS, Associate Professor of Equine Surgery at the University of Illinois, presented on osteochondritis dissecans (OCDs) in horses, sharing current research and practical insights aimed at supporting the long-term soundness and welfare of equine athletes.


Attendees also heard from Chuck Grubbs, President of the Kentucky Harness Horsemen’s Association, alongside USTA Executive Vice President and CEO Mike Tanner, who led an informative session on computer-assisted wagering. Tanner additionally provided a USTA update, outlining the organization’s ongoing initiatives and priorities for the year ahead.

 

Legislative, Insurance, and Committee Updates

 

Wednesday’s (Feb. 25) sessions covered a broad range of issues impacting horsemen nationwide. Emily Stearns of the American Horse Council delivered a comprehensive update on federal and national policy matters affecting the equine industry.

 

Bill Wittman of SmithBrothers introduced HHI’s new insurance carrier, Canopius US Insurance, Inc., and provided an overview of updated insurance offerings available to members.

 

Updates were also shared from HHI’s standing committees—Finance, Foundation, Legal, and Convention—and representatives from each of HHI’s member associations provided news, status reports, and organizational updates. Additionally, Vikki Pfeilsticker, Jessica Johnson, and Paul London volunteered to focus on identifying fundraising opportunities for the HHI Foundation.

 

Awards Luncheon Recognizes Industry Contributions

 

Wednesday concluded with HHI’s annual Awards Luncheon, recognizing individuals for their outstanding service and contributions to the industry:

  • Mikaela Del Giudice — Clyde Hirt Media Award

  • Richard Gillock — HHI Appreciation Award

  • Tom Luchento — Dominic Frinzi Person of the Year Award

 

Board Nominations and Leadership Updates
 

On Thursday (Feb. 26), Jessica Johnson, Dirk Simpson, Mike Harant, and Paul London were nominated and subsequently elected to serve as directors-at-large. Cathy Dessert and Aaron Hall did not stand for re-election.
